Why is play important in early childhood classroom.

“Much of the confusion surrounding the definition of play is related to the fact that in the child development literature the term play is often used to label most forms of children’s social and non-socialbehaviour, regardless of whether it is play or not” (Pellegrini, 2009).

To define 'play' is a very difficult job when it comes to children. It becomes very vague since every action of a child whether indoor or outdoor, is kind of a play. Play allows children to learn some basic social and cognitive existential skills. It is a basic structural and functional assistance for children in their early classroom times when the actual developmental growth takes place. Play will help children become self-efficient problem solvers because during play children create and solve their own problems.

Some of the basic impactsof a play in a child’s life are.

  • Helps children learn about the world and society
  • Promotes problem-solving
  • Promotes creativity, imagination, cognitive, social, and emotional development
  • Can be used to deepen understanding of classroom content
  • Enhances language and cultural development
  • As the research shows, play is an important part of the classroom because it helps develop the child in ways that other pedagogies and strategies cannot. Play is sure to develop the whole child, not just the cognitive parts.

Mainly there are two types of plays in a child’s life-

  1. Free play- In which the entire phenomena is led and characterised by the children themselves. They decide what they’ll do for the day and act accordingly. This has a lot of place for imagination and creativity. It helps children a lot in the cognitive development, like problem solving, conflict negotiation, social and emotional growth and collaboration tactics.
  2. Structured play- Also known as guided play,it is planned and led by some guides or teachers who plan the guidelines and make the children act like the schedule. This helps children to develop co-operative behaviour, strategic perspectives, following directions and aiming at subjectivity.

We, inKinderdance, take care of the physical and mental growth of the children and thus the various attributes of play is given priorities. We believe that the children are the creators of their own behavioural impact on their own lives and thus give them ample opportunities with different creative aspects in art and performance that help them to build a helpful attitude towards life, both in the social and cognitive spheres.
